Northwest

Why

The North West of Ireland has inspirational beauty and great activities for a family friendly holiday. The landscape has a captivating beauty and it has inspired famous poets. It offers a great array of activities for families including horse riding, cycling, boating, walking, world-class golf, swimming and surfing on the delightful beaches and angling. For family events this week and things to see do with the kids in the Northwest look at our what is on for kids this week page and what to do for free.

Cavan is called the lake country and has great angling, ancient oak forests for exploring and exciting adventure sports. Have a look at our articles by John Dunne on Lakeshores and lakeshore legends which the kids will love.

Donegal has very family friendly and spectacular national parks and a dramatic Atlantic coastline which shelters at some of Europe's finest deserted beaches. There is a Gealteacht where Irish is still spoken as a first language and many enchanting islands.

Families will enjoy the bewildering coastline of Sligo with its mountains and lochs and teenagers in particular will enjoy the surfing on the many beaches.

Leitrim has Ireland’s first eco-tourism destination, Greenbox which families who are interested in green tourism will enjoy.

Monaghan has great activities including horse riding, walking, cycling and golfing and was the home of Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh.

When

The region is great to visit all year round but is probably best between April and October when the weather is better. Ireland has a wealth of major festivals and events most of which have free activities suitable for families. There is always lots to see and do for the kids.  Have a look at our Family Events section for forthcoming family friendly events and things to do with the kids.
