Camping - Spain

Why

When we think of Spain as a holiday destination we usually think of the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca or Alicante. Equally we tend to think of camping traditionally as being in France as we have tended to go to French campsites rather than those in Spain. Spanish campsites can be very family friendly and can have better weather early in the season than many of those in France. You can also have the benefit of good access to cities such as Barcelona and theme parks such as PortAventura and get the benefit of a great city break and a theme park break while relaxing in the evenings in your beautiful campsite.

If you are considering taking the family camping abroad for the first time then do check out our helpful tips about camping and choosing a campsite and if you are pitching your own tent our checklist on camping packing.

Kids love the freedom of campsites. There's never a dull moment with exciting facilities such as swimming pools, water chutes, and lots of other children to play with. Sports and games on offer are geared to the different age groups, so there’s no chance of the kids getting bored. It is easy for them to mingle and make new friends and in many (but not all) campsites there are great kids clubs for children of all ages. Do check the age requirements, whether they are open when you are going to be there and have a look at our guide for selecting a kids club.

When

Spain is mild and pleasant for camping. Obviously the further south you go, the better the weather earl y in the season.

How

Camping operator prices can generally include a return ferry crossing. The ships operating these routes are no ordinary ferries and you'll find plenty to keep the family amused during the journey. The most popular ferry routes to Spain from Ireland are via the UK from Portsmouth to Bilbao and Portsmouth to Santander. You can book ferry crossings here independently.

If you want to fly-drive you will generally get a deduction off the price of your holiday. You can fly to Barcelona and Reus for the North of Spain campsites and check special offers and deals on flights here. You will need to think about getting to and from the campsite and about renting a car for excursions. We would recommend that you do hire a car if you fly for excursions and also to sample some of the local cuisine and partake in all the things to see and do around your campsite.

Family Accommodation

Your family can take their pick from a basic tent to the latest luxury mobile home. Try to go a bit bigger than you think you will need. Our recommended operators for Spain include Siblu, Keycamp and Eurocamp.

Suggested top family campsites

The Cambrils Park in Salou is a family favourite and is an excellent park especially suited to families with children. It is well located within close proximity of Barcelona and the PortAventura theme park which are both very attractive family friendly day trips. There are lots of things to do on site including organised activities for children from four years and upwards. There is a fantastic pool complex, a beach 1km away and lots of sports facilities. You can book this through Eurocamp.

The Park Playa Bara in Roda de Bera is also a family friendly site with a great pool complex and beach close by. It is also within close to Barcelona and PortAventura and you can book this with Eurocamp or Siblu.

The Vila Nova I la Geltru in Vilanova with Keycamp also has great facilities, a beach close by and great sea views.
